  1. 1. Probably the FM and the Headless Hunny. The tempo was good and KHP hit a fun power spike.

    2. It's been so long ago I can't even remember! Pretty sure it was through Patrick Rothfuss's good reads recommendations.

    3. Male 31 yrs

    4. Fantasy/Sci-fi

    5. Patrick Rothfuss, John Scalzi, K.J. Parker, Robin Mckinley, Richard K. Morgan, Ben Aaronovitch, and Ann Leckie to name a few.

    6. I use the Kindle app across multiple devices.

    7. Hadn't thought about it, but now that you mention it it seems like the kind of thing I would really like to have. So yes. I will buy them.

    8. I'm going to interpret this question somewhat liberally. My issue isn't with a specific book of the series and its mostly just a vague sense not a well researched analysis or anything, but I feel that the series is losing some of its coherence. What I mean by this is that the first few books are lean and mean, they grab you by the collar and don't let go. Every dialogue and piece of the plot contribute to the main points and smoothly transition to the next part. Lately I'm feeling a lack of that edge.

Far be it from me to encourage you to produce less material or god forbid increase the time between books, but I feel that a bit more time in editing wouldn't hurt and not for typo/grammar crap, just to sharpen things up a bit. I know this is rather vague. If you want me to be more specific about what I mean let me know and I would be happy to go back re-read stuff and be more specific.

    9. The soonest.

    10. see above

    11. No, I think in a fair universe you would be charging much more. Your books are under priced. I have spent much more on shit books from big name authors. Take this with a grain of salt as I am not at all knowledgeable about book pricing (other than as a consumer) or being an indie author. It seems to me however that a jump to 5.99$ wouldn't be unreasonable.

    12. Amazon

    13. No Master this unworthy fan has not convinced a single person(I am ashamed) but in my defense I don't live in the U.S. and the people I have influence on either A. Don't have the linguistic ability or B. Don't read fantasy at all.

    Signed,

    Unworthy minion

    14. Yes, Amazon

    15. Undecided, we haven't even seen what mentimancers can do yet! If forced to choose at this point; electromancer. While T-bone hasn't exactly showed electromancy off to its full potential like KHP is working on with geomancy...lightening bolts from my eyes. Fuck yes. Or on second thought maybe from my elbows somewhere with the fewest nerve endings.

    1. Per your (8) answer, I think it's a fair statement of specifically FM5 with a lot of possible reasons. One, I fully admit to being completely mentally exhausted by the time I finished my first draft and only gave the book a very quick one month in editing because I just didn't have it in me to give any more. Two, the nature of the beginning dealing with baggage from FM4 before it could get going. Three, the rising imbalance between Mainline chapters and School Story chapters, I think when they end with FM7 you will all immediately notice more "tightness" with FM8 being completely focused on only Mainline plots (will also automatically be 50 to 60k shorter than the previous books). Four, there was ALOT of set up in that book, scenes and story points that once your read FM6 to FM10 even you'll go "oh i get why RR sacrificed coheshion in this book for the good of the series". Five, even some scenes I considered cutting (Eva's whole plotline, Vicky and T-Bone romance) ended up leading to FM5.5 and without them you wouldn't have had that more concise story you all seeed to like. Six, I did cut some stuff but probably could have cut more, I very much chose to keep in a lot of jokes and gags because I knew the plot itself was pretty dark, so you could say consiseness was also sacrificed for some levity.

That being said, totally understand why you feel the way you do. I will be taking some extra time to be more critical of FM6 before I release it. With FM5 I let the "just publish it" win out, knowing there was no way it would ever be regarded as the best in the series, while with FM6 I feel an urge to top all that has come before. Of course I'm exactly in the middle of it all right now and it feels like it will never be finished and that it is some unbeatable monster, so congrats on feeding my paranoia of DOOM!!!

    2. Well you know its a fine line to walk. On the one hand you want to let the people who do/make awesome things you couldn't live without feel appreciated. On the other you don't want their heads to swell up and explode thereby depriving you of said awesomeness.

I enjoyed FM 6 a lot by the way. There was tons of awesome action and development more than earlier books. Also, I like books that are a bit more meandering. Some series can tend to get a bit formulaic so thanks for spicing things up.

As you pointed out there are a lot of long term considerations that I'm not privy too being as I haven't even thought about FM 10!

Thanks for letting us know a bit about the future plans.

What is the survey information intended to help you with by the way?

    3. Generally it's just good information for me to be aware of. Like if all of you had said your favorite genre was historical romance then I might have consider working on something called "Boudices, Bullets, and Big Butts" immediately. Specifically to some questions, 2 helps me figure out what promotions are working for finding fans, 9 and 10 I'm trying to maximize first week sales so I get higher on top 100 lists, 11 I'm undecided if I want FM6 to be 4.99 due to its size, and 12...I'm currently contemplating joining KDP Select for all my books, which would mean they no longer will be on websites besides Amazon. I'm in a place where my Amazon growth is doubling every main FM book release and the other segment is shrinking to less than 3% of my sales. KDP Select would let me directly advertise on Amazon and open my books up to Kindle Unlimited, could be big. So, basically trying to find anyone who only reads through iTunes or Nook.

  2. 1. What Foul Mouth book is your favorite of the bunch?
The Foul Mouth and the Fanged Lady. Has one of the best introductions I ever read.

    2. How did you find out about The King Henry Tapes?
Was in the recommendation list on Amazon

    3. Male? Female? Attack Helicopter?
    Male

    4. What is your favorite book genre?
    Fantasy

    5. Who are some of your favorite authors (no sucking up!)?
    Jim Butcher, Brandon Sanderson

    6. What e-reading device do you use?
    Kindle

    7. Are you planning to buy print on demand copies of The King Henry Tapes when the lazy author finally releases them?
Nope, ebook ruined printed books for me.

    8. What is your least favorite part of the series?
Vega and the rest of the were nations. The author keeps raising them to be on the same pedestral as the vampires and the mancers, but they just don't seem that strong or powerful. They are also the least interesting and mundane.

    9. What day would you prefer my books to release on?
    No preference

    10. Beginning of the month, middle, or end of the month?
    No preference

    11. Do you feel the series is fairly priced?
The actual novels are priced well, but the short stories are kinda pricey for how short they feel. I much prefer what you did with the Three Little Trips where you combined multiple short stories into one.

    12. What website do you buy the books through?
    Amazon.com mostly

    13. Have you tried to convince someone to read the series? Did they? What sold them?
Yup, got my coworker addicted. I think we largely appreciate the satirical and creativity you put into each and every one of your dialogues.

    14. Have you reviewed the series anywhere online?
Just a basic 5 star on goodreads and amazon.

    15. Last, for fun, if you could be any kind of mancer, what type would you want to be?
A fernthrower would be quite practical in the real world.

  3. 1. Headless Hunny.

    2. Popped up in Amazon recommendations.

    3. Male.

    4. Urban Fantasy.

    5. Jim Butcher, Robert Crane, and John Conroe are current favorites, and since she started me on urban fantasy, Laurell K. Hamilton needs to be mentioned for her Anita Blake series, but only up till book 10.

    6. Kindle App, mostly on iPhone.

    7. No. I've moved four times with 1000+ books and after having finally sold them all off before the last move I'm never going back to print.

    8. There's an overall feeling, especially in the Mancy Martial Artist, of the pace starting to slow down.

9 and 10. No preference other than when you deem them ready.

    11. I'd pay more for them after I got sucked into the first one, so...yes?

    12. Amazon.

    13. I've started at least six people in on the series who have pushed at least at a few more.

    14. I have not.

    15. You haven't really let out all of the tricks for each mancer type, but your descriptions of shadow manipulation were awesome.

  4. 1. Fanged Lady, it was all new and intense!
    2. I think it was back when I used to do genre searches and sorted by cost.
    3. Male, 51
    4. Science Fiction / Fantasy
    5. Asimov, Niven, Lawrence Watt Evans, Powers, Curie…
    6. Kindle App on iPhone 6
    7. Was considering it, money is tight with kids education costs
    8. Maybe keeping the time lines straight in my head
    9. With e-books it is kinda unimportant to me
    10. As above
    11. Yes, I don’t think I have ever considered paying for any of the big names in ebook with their pricing
    12. Amazon
    13. Oh Yes! Got four friends addicted to the series. Probably some others
    14. Goodreads and Amazon kinda moot point since Amazon acquired Goodreads
    15. Probably Cryo or Hydro

    1. Per your (8), my biggest complaint with writing them too! Latest FM6 problem: wait, wait, didn't I already say once what the color of the walls in Miranda's dorm were? Enter search mode and an hour later to find out.

  5. 1. What Foul Mouth book is your favorite of the bunch?
Troubled Boomworm. That's the book that brought in a lot of interesting characters I look forward to seeing more of- The Three Queens, The Curator, Christmas.

    2. How did you find out about The King Henry Tapes?
I occasionally browse the "Top 100 Free" bestsellers on Amazon and found the first book in the series.

    3. Male? Female? Attack Helicopter?
    Female, 27

    4. What is your favorite book genre?
    Fantasy

    5. Who are some of your favorite authors (no sucking up!)?
Scott Lynch, Robin Hobb, Anne McCaffrey, MeiLin Miranda, Diana Gabaldon.

    6. What e-reading device do you use?
    Kindle app on multiple devices.

    7. Are you planning to buy print on demand copies of The King Henry Tapes when the lazy author finally releases them?
Absolutely. I plan on buying the first book in bulk and handing them out to friends like candy (the first hit is always free...).

    8. What is your least favorite part of the series?
It's hard to think of anything I don't like about these books. I guess I was least interested in learning about the vampire higher-ups. I was also afraid of King Henry turning into a Mary-Sue type character. Everything seems to happen to him, but he always survives and has a funny one liner to say. The latest book brought in his friends from school, and I liked the feeling that they will contribute to the overall plot line. I don’t want to see King Henry as “the greatest Mancer ever.” I want to see him as a part of the “the strongest Macer generation ever.”

    9. What day would you prefer my books to release on?
    No preference.

    10. Beginning of the month, middle, or end of the month?
    No preference.

    11. Do you feel the series is fairly priced?
I think you could (and should) charge a little more.

    12. What website do you buy the books through?
    Amazon.

    13. Have you tried to convince someone to read the series? Did they? What sold them?
Yes, and yes. The first book being free convinced my friend to try it out. That was also the month where the next two books were only $0.99. She bought the next two before finishing the first book. I have other friends that we regularly gift books to each other. If I could give a paperback book as a gift, I know they would be hooked. Gifting an e-book just doesn’t seem to work as well, because it gets stashed in the cloud and lost. Gifting a physical book sits on the coffee table and stares them in the face until they pick it up and read it.

    14. Have you reviewed the series anywhere online?
    Amazon.

    15. Last, for fun, if you could be any kind of mancer, what type would you want to be?
Hydromancer, as I find water relaxing, but if I lived in King Henry’s world I don’t think I would want to work as one. Spring is approaching and it makes me want to be a Faunamancer.

  6. 1. What Foul Mouth book is your favorite of the bunch?
The Fanged Lady because it brought me into the Foul Mouth universe.

    2. How did you find out about The King Henry Tapes?
    Amazon recommendations.

    3. Male? Female? Attack Helicopter?
Male, but if you have a line on how to turn into an attack helicopter I don't know why you haven't shared it yet.

    4. What is your favorite book genre?
    Fantasy/Science Fiction.

    5. Who are some of your favorite authors (no sucking up!)?
John Conroe, Jim Butcher, Glenn Bullion, Larry Correia, Rachel Aaron, Ben Bequer, Mark Lawrence, Elliot Kay, and of course yourself.

    6. What e-reading device do you use?
    Kindle.

    7. Are you planning to buy print on demand copies of The King Henry Tapes when the lazy author finally releases them?
Probably not, paper copies take up so much space.

    8. What is your least favorite part of the series?
The Asylum story for FM5 seemed to drag and didn't really end that I noticed. It just left me hanging with some knowledge about the Three Queens and that the teacher said they would "handle it" then cut out, but never cut back to it. It felt like the main story sucked up all of your attention and the Asylum bit was written as an afterthought. The other Asylum stories always felt balanced with the main story.

    9. What day would you prefer my books to release on?
I would say tomorrow, but I don't want to end up in a situation like the movie Click. So your preference.

    10. Beginning of the month, middle, or end of the month?
I want to say beginning of the month so I can read it earlier.

    11. Do you feel the series is fairly priced?
I would say it's under priced. At book six I don't think anybody will begrudge you a raise in price.

    12. What website do you buy the books through?
    Amazon.

    13. Have you tried to convince someone to read the series? Did they? What sold them?
I have mentioned it in passing to several people, mostly strangers, but don't know if they bought and read them.

    14. Have you reviewed the series anywhere online?
I try and do Amazon reviews.

    15. Last, for fun, if you could be any kind of mancer, what type would you want to be?
Either an Artificer because you get to make awesome toys that go fucking boom and hit stuff, or a Facechanger because who doesn't want to be stronger and faster than everybody else.

    2. How did you find out about The King Henry Tapes?

    Old, grumpy male. Usually.

    4. What is your favorite book genre?

Berg, Tom Holt, Harry Connolly (ending Twenty Palaces was a crime), Christopher Moore, B. Justin Shier (sadly missed). Newbies who look like becoming firm favorites: Kel Kade and Clay Johnson.

    6. What e-reading device do you use?

    Kindle.

    7. Are you planning to buy print on demand copies of The King Henry Tapes when the lazy author finally releases them?

    No, why kill trees?

    8. What is your least favorite part of the series?

I have a strong aversion to Miranda Daniels (reminds me of someone from my past).

    9. What day would you prefer my books to release on?

    Saturday.

    10. Beginning of the month, middle, or end of the month?

Beginning; definitely not the end, when I may have maxed out my debit card.

    11. Do you feel the series is fairly priced?

    Yes. You could charge more.

    12. What website do you buy the books through?

    Amazon.

    13. Have you tried to convince someone to read the series? Did they? What sold them?

Some old friends and some online acquaintances. They did. I did.

    14. Have you reviewed the series anywhere online?

    Amazon and Goodreads.

    15. Last, for fun, if you could be any kind of mancer, what type would you want to be?

Assuming I'd be an Ultra? Assuming as a Geo I wouldn't have to work for the Guild? Assuming…. Balancing everything and making no assumptions, I'd go for Scio.

    Hail our Amazonian Overlords!

  14. 1. What Foul Mouth book is your favorite of the bunch?
    Don't have one.
    2. How did you find out about The King Henry Tapes?
Found the first one listed on a now defunct website which catalogued Amazon giveaways.
    3. Male? Female? Attack Helicopter?
    Female
    4. What is your favorite book genre?
    Fantasy
    5. Who are some of your favorite authors (no sucking up!)?
Andrea Host (Interesting world building, interesting character conflicts. Her blog has some interesting thoughts on how magic would alter economics and gender relationships.)
Lois McMaster Bujold (I'm really digging the books in which the characters are older and dealing with second half of life problems: death of mate, broken dreams, failing body, loss of original vocation.)
Christopher Moore (His early books are amusingly snarky. I find the Shakespeare retellings unreadable.)
Robin McKinley (I like her fairy tale retellings. I also like the fact that her animal characters have personalities appropriate to the species.)
Tim Powers (Crazy original ideas. Bugsy Siegel as Fisher King?! Identifying werewolves by monitoring patrons of a hair removal clinic?!)
John McPhee (Love how he makes the oddest topics interesting.)
    6. What e-reading device do you use?
    Kindle
    7. Are you planning to buy print on demand copies of The King Henry Tapes when the lazy author finally releases them?

As the series has progressed, the voice comes across less & less like a oral history spoken into a tape recorder.

    15. Last, for fun, if you could be any kind of mancer, what type would you want to be?
Dunno. Fauna, flora, electro, and geo all sounds fun. Probably wouldn't enjoy cryo, pyro, or necro. Don't know if I could handle menti.

  15. 1. What Foul Mouth book is your favorite of the bunch? I don't really have a favorite--I take them as a whole package and crave my next fix.

    2. How did you find out about The King Henry Tapes? I think I stumbled upon the FM series through one of those "here's your free e-reader deals for the day" things. I downloaded it and let it sit in my Kindle for an eternity before I finally decided to read. I then promptly asked for Amazon gift cards and started downloading every FM novel and short story I could find.

    3. Male? Female? Attack Helicopter? Female, 47 years old, reading your stuff from the wheat fields of rural Kansas--never been to CA, so I have to take your word on it as you describe the locales, but freaking loved KH's trip cross-country with Ceinwyn, since I know those places.

    4. What is your favorite book genre? I didn't know your genre existed before the FM series, but I'm a huge fan now. I also like just about anything that combines mythology/fantasy and action, such as the Alchemyst series. I like humor and sarcasm.

    5. Who are some of your favorite authors (no sucking up!)?
    You, duh.
    Becca Andre
Angel Edenburn/Gena Mantz since I know her
    Michael Scott
    Mark Twain
    Lillian Jackson Braun
    Patricia Beatty

    6. What e-reading device do you use? Kindle

    7. Are you planning to buy print on demand copies of The King Henry Tapes when the lazy author finally releases them?
I'm considering it--I love "real" books that I can see on my shelves.

    8. What is your least favorite part of the series? My eyes kinda glazed over as KH and Valentine were walking through the Geo Realm, but I know it was necessary for the story.

    9. What day would you prefer my books to release on? Yesterday

    10. Beginning of the month, middle, or end of the month? Earliest possible

    11. Do you feel the series is fairly priced? Yes. On one hand, I think you are probably short-changing yourself, but on the other hand, I just finished another author's series and nearly gagged every time I had to buy the next book for $7.99 as an e-book, so I am torn as a consumer.

    12. What website do you buy the books through? Amazon

    13. Have you tried to convince someone to read the series? Did they? What sold them? Yes, I tell people about them all the time! I don't know if they ever read them or not, but I know I told them.

    14. Have you reviewed the series anywhere online?
    Amazon

    15. Last, for fun, if you could be any kind of mancer, what type would you want to be? Menti, of course.

  16. And a month later...

    1. I really liked FM5. More character development. You also give stories to a lot of characters that have been background filler until now.

    2. Don't remember how I was introduced to KH. Probably the 99 cent deal. But I know I bought the next 2 books and all of the e-books (and read them) in about a week. I have also re-read them all a couple of times.

    3. Female/32

    4. Normally fantasy and sci-fi are my genres of choice

    5. Jim Butcher hands down. I've also read all of the Terry Brooks books (sorry no Pratchett).

    6. I still use my Nook. Yeah, yeah I know I need to get with the program especially since KH is no longer available from B&N.

    7. Of course I will buy the books. When the zombie apocalypse happens, I will still need my KH fix! E-reader or tablet would be pointless if you can't charge it.

    8. I don't like Val. She is too wishy-washy for me. You either love him and will be with him or you won't. This back and forth is stupid.

    9. Any day ending in "-y"

    10. Is all three an option?

    11. Kind of unfairly on your end. I agree with the other post. I would be willing to pay more but please don't leave me butt hurt,ok?

    12. Used to buy through B&N but will need a change of plans for future books.

    13. From the beginning KH has reminded me of my husband. Well minus the private school and mancy. So when I told him he had to read The Fanged Lady, he was reluctant (the only other series we agree on is Dresden). When he started laughing so hard he was crying I knew it was a keeper. He has since introduced KH to several guys at work and I basically tell anyone who won't get all offended at the creativity that is used when KH opens his mouth.

    14. Yes. Goodreads and B&N.

    15. Hydromancer but would probably end up an aeromancer due to my love of sweets, light/airy food and my inability to get along with other females.

  18. 1. What Foul Mouth book is your favorite of the bunch?

Hard to say, but I'm going to go with Headless Hunny because not only was it a great story, but it contains the most, and most recent, content of my favorite (non-KH) character, Annie B.

    2. How did you find out about The King Henry Tapes?

    FoH/RR

    3. Male? Female? Attack Helicopter?

    Male, 47, A-10 Warthog.

    4. What is your favorite book genre?

    Fantasy

    5. Who are some of your favorite authors (no sucking up!)?

Glen Cook, Brandon Sanderson, Christopher Hinz, Joe Abercrombie, Jim Butcher, countless others.

    6. What e-reading device do you use?

    Kindle.

    7. Are you planning to buy print on demand copies of The King Henry Tapes when the lazy author finally releases them?

I wasn't planning on it, as I haven't bought a physical book in years, but I probably would for yours. You're special!

    8. What is your least favorite part of the series?

Other than the wait between books? I'm honestly drawing a blank, but I know that doesn't help you improve. I know, all your ellipses!

    9. What day would you prefer my books to release on?

Mon-Fri because I surf the internet way more from work, and might miss a weekend release. Other than that, the day it is ready.

    10. Beginning of the month, middle, or end of the month?

    No cares.

    11. Do you feel the series is fairly priced?

    Yes, it should cost more.

    12. What website do you buy the books through?

    Amazon.

    13. Have you tried to convince someone to read the series? Did they? What sold them?

Yes, several, and a few did. Mostly just my history of good recommendations, but the inexpensive first book was probably a big help as well.

    14. Have you reviewed the series anywhere online?

Yes, Amazon and Goodreads at least, maybe Smashwords if the first couple were there.

    15. Last, for fun, if you could be any kind of mancer, what type would you want to be?

The superhero in me would probably want to be a Pyromancer to be awesome, but the chubby old guy in me would probably want to be a Corpusmancer on par with Isabel to get all the chicks.

  19. The series gets better and better. What I have found is this: If you had a publisher, and possibly a set of different set of titles (The Foul Mouth and....) isn't as catchy as we would like, I don't see why you wouldn't be a best seller. These are some of the best books I have ever read. Ever. Ever. Best. Ever. I am not a marketing person so I don't have a solid idea on how to do it so don't ask but these are good. But God, these are good. On the other hand, you should make the first two or three free, and then charge for everything after that. I would have paid for everything. Not only that, if you put them on Audible, I would have gladly paid for anything after I read the first book.

Which is why you need to get another cover. This cover is killing you. I don't know how you are getting anything sold with this cover. It would almost be better to go with GeoMancer colors and take still life pictures of Artificer artifacts. That's actually a good idea, drape an Artificer coat over a chair, and put the artifacts on the chair seat. As the books progress you can put more artifacts on the chair, maybe show the Shaky Stick sticking out of the coat pocket.

Right now you are one of my favorite authors others are: Brandon Sanderson, Jim Butcher, Steven King, Anne Bishop, Michael J. Sullivan, and the writing team of James S. A. Corey.

  21. 1. No one favorite. Favorite events or moments within the series too numerous to mention that made me laugh out loud and get looks from co workers in the lunch room or from my husband, who introduced me to the series, so I could tell him what made me snort!

    2. My husband introduced me.

    3. Female. Now 49.

    4. Urban fantasy, traditional fantasy, steam punk...so the artificer angle appeals to all

    5. Robert Jordan (dec) George RR Martin, David Eddings (dec), Tanya Huff, Gail Carriger, Brandon Sanderson, Melissa F. Olsen, Faith Hunter, Gigi Pandan, Patricia Briggs...I could go on, and of course, you!

    6. What e-reading device do you use? IPad Kindle and iBooks on max type size due to vision issues.

    7. Cannot row print on demand unless print type is giant. Electronic is better or my preferred is audiobooks

    8. Saddened by his losses, but understand they are what made him who he is

    9. Friday for weekend binging and no workdays. Also payday when we have disposable income.

    10. Middle

    11. VERY! Worth way more...did I say that?!

    12. Amazon.com

    13. Yes. The assurance of brilliant, unabashed laugh-out-loud humor..

    14. Have you reviewed the series anywhere online? Pretty sure we did on Amazon.
