Post? Plague Notes

1.  Back at it!

2.  Obviously The Plague knocked my schedule back a bit (not that I'm very good at keeping them lately!) so everything I talked about last time, add a week or two.

3.  Assault on Dread Fortress Paine is getting closer and closer to being done.  The final edit is winding down, have the last couple scenes left to finish.  Then after that I have like 2k-4k of original writing to wrap up, cuz I'm weird and do stuff out of order for some reason.  I do it for almost every book actually.  Another good one I always seem to manage is writing the last chapter before writing the second to last chapter.  Using FM6 as an example I wrote all the Eureka stuff, then the Post Eureka stuff, and only THEN wrote the Geo Realm chapter.

4.  After said final edit is over, I'll do my Kindle edit.  Unless I make some HUGE mistake everything will be locked down before hand and it's mostly typo hunting, playing with paragraphs and with the FM books actually the first time I get to read them with both the timelines and figuring out where each one should flip back and forth.  After THAT we have the beta read and then release.

5.  So...March!

6.  Curse the Plague!  Without it, new Richard Raley writing would be in your hands by now!

7.  Richard Raley writing and not a King Henry book because there's actually no King Henry in this one...outside of T-Bone's imagination at least...

8.  Then we're on to the next one, cuz it never ends!  The Glassbreaker Goes Home.  Stolen from The Thin Man Goes Home.  Which is a movie series everyone should watch.

9.  Speaking of movies...I have Thor Ragnarok, Justice League, Coco, and Blade Runner 2049 all sitting unwatched, so I should get to that.  Also Altered Carbon.  Which is a book all of you should read.  In my top 50 for sure.

10.  Confession Time:  I've never seen the first Blade Runner!  Can you believe that?!?!?   Also haven't seen Shawshank Redemption...or the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.  I know...

11.  Here's hoping the next post is a release date!

  1. Glad you’re mostly over the plague. Can’t wait for a spring and summer of fresh Richard Raley writings to keep my swearing on par

  2. Excellent news about the writing.... oh and, um... the feeling better too- yes, probably should have led with that. Darned manners, trip you up every time. As to writing out of order- that's what works- figure you should always write what you "know" first- then figure out how to make those pieces connect.

  3. Down with the plague! Altered carbon series is a must read. Dunno about the drama adaptation. Can't bring myself to watch it yet and always be comparing it to the book.

  4. Uhhh you never saw Shawshank?? I may have to stop reading your books until you fix this..I can excuse The Good bad and Ugly, as I may have never seen it in one sitting either. Its funny that Shawshank is so good that I honestly think it is weird that a favorite writer never saw it. How can someone write well if they never saw Shawshank?!? Inconceivable!!

  5. I never read the altered carbon books so I didnt have any books to be ruined for me but I did enjoy the series. You;re not missing much with Blade Runner and the even worse sequel (yes i said it, 2049 was shit). I too have never seen the good, the bad, the ugly

  6. Finished the last available King Henry book (totally NOT an elbow jog), and was jonesing for more, so went to Anaconda River and purchased The Betrothal and am now enjoying its foot-notary goodness.

Recommend Good, the Bad, and the Ugly- yes, it's too long, but worth it.

Also in the Western vein- Once Upon a Time in the West. There is a ginger scene early on that would be King Henry-approved. And also... Claudia Cardinale....

Then there's My Name is Nobody- an interesting Henry Fonda turn

    1. "What are we gonna do with this one, Frank?"
"You mean now that you've called me by name?"

Henry Fonda as a bad guy, Claudia Cardinale as Claudia Cardinale, Jason Robards as a bandit, and Charles Bronson as Vengeance Incarnate.

Once Upon A Time In The West.
      Yup.

  7. I've been taking a breather from probably the 30th time of rereading the series. Sometimes I start at one and sometimes I jump around. Other than Dorothy Gilman's Mrs. Polifax, KHP is my favorite re-read. Always transports me. A couple years ago I was in a bad emotional place and KHP might be the only thing that kept me sorta sane. Always, my thanks.

    Have not watched Shawshank either.

  9. Dave's Awful Short Must-Watch List:

    Mafia movies:
*The Godfather-- one of the best movies ever made, period.
*Casino--Vegas before it went Disney, Vegas with the control rods all the way out. Oh hell yeah.

    Comedy:
*Snatch--Guy Ritchie's breakout film and the one that rocketed Jason Stratham to the top. Plus two of the world's best badass monologs ever made.
    *Young Frankenstein--Mel Brooks' finest work.

    Action:
*Thief--James Caan in a modern noir classic.
*Sorcerer--Four strangers from grim backgrounds, a cargo of sweaty dynamite, and a few hundred miles of jungle. No actual sorcerers included.
*Heat--DeNiro, Pacino, Kilmer. Actual real-world robberies were patterned after this film and the final shootout scene was used for training U.S. Marines.

    Westerns:
*Once Upon A Time In The West-- see above.
*Fistful of Dollars-- Spaghetti Western take on Red Harvest, one of the most copied stories ever. "My mistake, four coffins."
*For A Few Dollars More--More Eastwood, but now with Van Cleef! Watching Lee Van Cleef messing with the hunchback (Klaus Kinski!) in the bar is worth it by itself.
*The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly--"Some people have guns, and some people dig. You dig."

    Horror:
*Phantasm--The classic of dreamlike nightmare. Angus Scrimm as The Tall Man.
*Near Dark--The cast of Aliens, minus Weaver, do vampires to a C&W beat. "I hates it when they ain't been shaved..."
*Alien (the first movie)--A Lovecraftian haunted house story in deep space.
*The Grudge--How good is it? So good that being remade form the Japanese original to an American version with Sarah Michelle Gellar DIDN'T ruin it.

    F/SF:
*Flash Gordon--Campy and cheesy, but still a great popcorn movie. Plus, Max von Sydow having the time of his life as Ming.
*The Thing (original AND remake)-- Both are classic, you just have to ignore how dated the f/x are in the remake.
*They Live--Rowdy Roddy Piper is here to kick ass and chew bubblegum. And he's all out of bubblegum.
*Aliens (the second movie)--Less a horror movie than a straight-up action flick, and one of the most quoted around gaming tables (after Monty Python).

    Bonus:
*Yojimbo--or pretty much any other Samurai film where Kurosawa directs Toshiro Mifune. Wanna see where Clint Eastwood got his Man With No Name persona from? Watch Mifune as a samurai.
*Zulu-- Michael Caine's breakout role. The defense of Roarke's Drift, 150 English soldiers versus four THOUSAND angry Zulus.
*The Lion In Winter-- Peter O'Toole, Katherine Hepburn, and more bitterness, spite and malice than one castle should be able to hold. Maybe the second best Christmas movie of all time.
